The Creative LowDown

Brett May

What does it mean to be Creative? Think long and hard about it. Is it picking up a pencil or paintbrush and making a few strokes here and there? Is it looking at a computer screen for countless hours editing the next big Coke-Cola commercial? Maybe its putting together words to form a pattern thats going to impact the entire world. Heres what webster has to say about it:

creative |krēˈātiv|

adjective – relating to or involving the imagination or original ideas, esp. in the production of an artistic work : change unleashes people’s creative energy | creative writing.• (of a person) having good imagination or original ideas :

For me, I see creative with the click of the shutter. Do a little Click’ Click’ with that Snap’ Snap’ if you know what I mean. (Something one of my Professors said) But make something awesome. I want somebody to look at my work, double-take, stagger back and say “Damn thats cool”. But by no means is that my soul motivation. Art is a funny thing because its worth nothing, but then again its priceless. So why do it?  I’m a photographer because I love what I’m doing. “Do what Love, Love what you Do”. Its a real simple concept, but even I screw it up. Its all where your priorities lie. My professors drilled into from day one that photography is not about art, money, and cool equipment. (although they’re apart of the deal) Photography is about Problem solving. You find yourself confronted with a task, you take your knowledge and experiences and you apply them to get the job done. The more you do it, the better you get. The best part is you can be Creative in how you get the job done. I’m not going to have the same answer to creating a photo that somebody else might shoot differently. Maybe my style doesn’t fit your idea; No biggy. We’re still friends and I can learn something from it and grow. Photography is forever changing so Learning and Growing is vital to survival. So what makes you Creative, What pushes you to that next level? Go make something cool!

Brett, I got some traffic to my blog from your site, so I decided to come over and pay your site a visit. Really nice work! I like your imagery, and I really enjoyed reading this post on creativity. I’m fascinated with the ideas and concept of creativity and how we apply it in our photography and in our general lives as well. Thanks for linking to me and keep up the good work! -Dan Bailey
